{"id":7489,"date":"2019-04-15T20:13:07","date_gmt":"2019-04-15T20:13:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.com\/zimbabwe\/?p=7489"},"modified":"2019-04-15T20:13:07","modified_gmt":"2019-04-15T20:13:07","slug":"zimbabwes-president-opens-debate-on-gukurahundi-massacres","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.cc\/zimbabwe\/all-news\/zimbabwes-president-opens-debate-on-gukurahundi-massacres","title":{"rendered":"Zimbabwe&#8217;s President Opens Debate on Gukurahundi Massacres"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"fullNewsIntrotext\">Harare, Apr 15 (Prensa Latina) Zimbabwe&#8221;s President Emmerson Mnangagwa opened Monday public debate on the Gukurahundi massacres, a repressive campaign unleashed during the 1980s in the country.<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"fullNewsFulltext\">Let&#8217;s open a debate so as not to fear anything, said the President about something which was prohibited to mention, according to local newspaper The Herald.<\/p>\n<p>Mnangagwa commented the idea of speaking publicly about the event arose from the meeting with the Matabeleland Collective, a group of relatives of the victims of the massacres.<\/p>\n<p>Virginia Mabhiza, Secretary of the Ministry of Justice for Legal and Parliamentary Affairs, said the President promised to exhume the victims from the mass graves and give them a dignified burial.<\/p>\n<p>She stated that protection mechanisms will be set up so that those affected by Gukurahundi massacres can discuss their experiences, while admitting that many still suffer.<\/p>\n<p>The repressive campaign against Ndebele speakers and members of the Marxist African People&#8217;s Union began in 1982 and lasted until the late 1990s under the presidency of Robert Mugabe.
