Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. <\/strong><\/span>Former Real Madrid, Germany and Arsenal midfielder, Mesut Ozil, has announced his immediate retirement at the age of 34 citing injuries.<\/p>\n

The World Cup Winner wrote on Instagram saying that it was becoming \u201cmore and more clear that it\u2019s time to leave the big stage of football\u201d, with injuries playing a part in his decision.<\/p>\n

Ozil\u2019s final game came on February 2, when he was substituted at half-time during Istanbul Basaksehir\u2019s 1-0 defeat at Kayserispor in the Turkish Super Lig. It was one of just two starts he made for the club after signing from Fenerbahce last summer.<\/p>\n

Ozil\u2019s statement read:<\/p>\n

After thoughtful consideration, I\u2019m announcing my immediate retirement from professional football.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve had the privilege to be a professional football player for almost 17 years now and I feel incredibly thankful for the opportunity.<\/p>\n

But in recent weeks and months, having also suffered some injuries, it\u2019s become more and more clear that it\u2019s time to leave the big stage of football.<\/p>\n

It has been an amazing journey filled with unforgettable moments and emotions. I want to thank my clubs \u2013 Schalke, Werder Bremen, Real Madrid, Arsenal, Fenerbahce and Basaksehir \u2013 and the coaches who supported me, plus teammates who have become friends.<\/p>\n

Special thanks must go to my family members and my closest friends. They have been a part of my journey from day one and have given me so much love and support, through the good times and the bad.<\/p>\n

Thank you to all my fans who have shown me so much love no matter the circumstances and no matter which club I was representing.<\/p>\n

Now I\u2019m looking forward to everything that is in front of me with my beautiful wife, Amine, and my two beautiful daughters, Eda and Ela \u2013 but you can be sure that you will hear from me from time to time on my social media channels.<\/p>\n

Ozil was hampered by fitness problems during his 18-month spell at Fenerbahce before he joined their Turkish rivals at the start of the season.<\/p>\n

Ozil played 37 times for Fenerbahce, scoring nine goals, Sky Sports reported.<\/p>\n

Mesut Ozil\u2019s Career in Brief:<\/b><\/p>\n

i). Mesut Ozil played 254 times for Arsenal and won four FA Cups with the Gunners,<\/p>\n

ii). He made 159 appearances for Real Madrid, winning LaLiga and the Copa del Rey;<\/p>\n

iii). He won 92 caps for Germany, scoring 23 goals and lifting the World Cup in 2014.<\/p>\n
