Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. <\/strong><\/span>HARARE \u2013 The voters\u2019 roll for the upcoming general elections in Zimbabwe will be made available to election candidates at the end of June, the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) said.<\/p>\n

This according to the electoral body\u2019s chief elections officer, Utloile Silaigwana when he announced the end of the mop-up voter registration exercise on Friday.<\/p>\n

ZEC came under fire from the opposition and independent election watch bodies for the opaque manner in which it has so far run the voter registration and verification exercise.<\/p>\n

Thousands of people found their names missing from the voters\u2019 roll upon verifying via mobile phone platforms.<\/p>\n

Others noticed their names were moved from the polling stations in which they registered in.<\/p>\n

For a country with a history of suspicion of electoral fraud, some saw the glitches as part of structural vote rigging.<\/p>\n

Silaigwana said all that would be resolved by 21 June when the nomination court sits.<\/p>\n

He said: \u201cThe Commission would like to assure members of the public that it will rectify any anomalies that were observed during the voters\u2019 roll inspection exercise. This will be done during the final compilation of the voters\u2019 roll.\u201d<\/p>\n

In March, the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) legislator, Allan Markham filed a court application challenging ZEC for access to the electronic voters\u2019 roll.<\/p>\n

The courts ruled against him because \u201cit was too risky\u201d and in the interest of data protection.<\/p>\n

But that didn\u2019t stop Zanu PF from sending text messages to registered voters urging them to vote for President Emmerson Mnangagwa.<\/p>\n

The opposition alleged that Zanu PF had access to the voters\u2019 roll which is why it had the capacity to send the messages.<\/p>\n

Slaigwana said the voters\u2019 roll will, after the nomination court, which sits on 21 June, be \u201cavailed free to prospective candidates.\u201d<\/p>\n
