Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. <\/strong><\/span>A Cape Town Metro Police officer was tragically killed in a drive-by shooting while transporting staff home, according to Safety and Security MMC JP Smith.<\/p>\n

The incident happened on Friday night while the officer was transporting staff home. Smith said:<\/p>\n

Sadly last night one of our law enforcement officers was the victim of a drive-by shooting.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m afraid that puts us in a situation where we have to understand what the nature of that hit was.<\/p>\n

The city has not yet confirmed if the shooting is connected to the ongoing taxi strike. Instances of public violence have been reported in various areas, including Khayelitsha, Wynberg, Atlantis, Hout Bay, and Milnerton, where buses, trucks, and private vehicles were targeted.<\/p>\n

This incident follows the recent death of a 37-year-old off-duty LEAP officer, Toufeeq Williams, who was fatally struck by a stray bullet in Beacon Valley, Mitchells Plain. Williams, who was caught in gang crossfire, was part of the Hanover Park LEAP deployment team.<\/p>\n

Gun violence is a prevalent and pressing issue in South Africa, characterised by high rates of firearm-related crimes, homicides, and gang activities.
