MDC supporters on Saturday heckled late party President Morgan Tsvangirai\u2019s son, Edwin off the stage after during an address in which he tried to thank President Emmerson Mnangagwa for the latter\u2019s material support towards the ex-Prime Minister\u2019s memorial.<\/p>\n
Edwin Tsvangirai was speaking at the late opposition leader\u2019s memorial ceremony held in Humanikwa village, Buhera District on Saturday.<\/p>\n
\u201cI would like to thank the government and President for their assistance,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Other MDC supporters were annoyed by Edwin\u2019s reference to Mnangagwa as \u201cPresident\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe should not address him as the President because he is not the legitimate country\u2019s leader,\u201d said one member.<\/p>\n
Another party supporter felt Edwin, who a largely invisible figure during his late father\u2019s painstaking struggles with a brutal Zanu PF regime.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe does not know what the party went through because he has never been part of us,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe should not have made that reckless speech.\u201d<\/p>\n
Despite the outcry, Edwin remained adamant stating that where something good has been done, gratitude should be expressed.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen a good deed is done, we should be thankful. You had meals provided by the government. That\u2019s something to be grateful for,\u201d he told the fuming crowd after Mnangagwa had donated food to feed 5 000 people to Tsvangirai\u2019s memorial.<\/p>\n
In his keynote address, leader Nelson Chamisa tried to calm tempers, reiterating Edwin\u2019s comments that what was good must be thanked.<\/p>\n
\u201cMnangagwa is my opponent but I acknowledge when something good is done. The police were sent here by the government to maintain peace and order. That\u2019s a good thing; we must be grateful,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Over a hundred security forces were deployed to maintain order. They were uncharacteristically courteous to the MDC crowd and at some point, formed a human aisle for Chamisa to leave the stage for his car.<\/p>\n
