Recent developments point towards a continued contest amongst world giants to win Zimbabwe.<\/p>\n
On Thursday, the United States opened a remarkably large and expensive embassy in Harare. The U.S. ambassador to Zimbabwe described it as a symbol of America\u2019s commitment to the people of Zimbabwe. This attracted several responses with some arguing that the USA was not being genuine as its sanctions are still on Zimbabwe.<\/p>\n
Officially launching the embassy, Ambassador Brian Nichols said:<\/p>\n
In addition to structures, we built relationships across a network of service providers. We look forward to deepening those relationships.<\/p>\n
The United States aspires to strengthen its partnership with Zimbabwe and to expand trade and investment between our countries. Embracing political and economic reform is the key to achieving these goals.<\/p>\n
Japan, perceived to be one of US\u2019 allies, also recently pledged to support Zimbabwe on technology and infrastructure. This was revealed by the Japanese Ambassador to Zimbabwe Toshiyuki Iwado at an event held to commemorate the ascension of Japan\u2019s new Emperor Naruhito. Japan together with India has had reservations on Chinese initiatives globally. However, their combined investments in Africa do match those of China<\/p>\n
On the other hand, China announced plans this week to build a cultural center in Harare to cement its partnership with Zimbabwe on the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). Chinese Ambassador Guo Shaochun praised China\u2019s \u201cgreat partnership\u201d with Zimbabwe and \u201cfruitful\u201d cooperation on cultural and educational issues.
