{"id":8824,"date":"2019-05-14T17:37:04","date_gmt":"2019-05-14T17:37:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.com\/zimbabwe\/?p=8824"},"modified":"2019-05-14T17:37:04","modified_gmt":"2019-05-14T17:37:04","slug":"chief-justice-zim-judges-beg-for-transport-from-litigants","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.cc\/zimbabwe\/all-news\/chief-justice-zim-judges-beg-for-transport-from-litigants","title":{"rendered":"Chief Justice: Zim judges beg for transport from litigants"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>ZIMBABWEAN judges and magistrates are often forced to beg for transport from individuals who later appear in their courts as litigants.<\/p>\n<p>This was revealed by their boss, Chief Justice Luke Malaba in a speech during the official opening of a new Labour Court building in Harare on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>The event was presided over by President Emmerson Mnangagwa.<\/p>\n<p>In his speech, Malaba implored government to prioritise the purchase of conditions of service vehicles and houses for judges and magistrates to preserve their dignity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are concerned about the conditions of service for judges and magistrates. Some of our judges are yet to receive their conditions of service motor vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe do appreciate Your Excellency the scarcity of foreign currency.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is necessary that some allocations be prioritised, acquisition of conditions of service vehicles for judges,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He added, \u201cIn the same vein, most of our magistrates have no accommodation of their own and vehicles. They are having to hike for transport from potential litigants.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs JSC (Judicial Service Commission), we continue to look at ways in which we can ameliorate these difficulties so that judges and magistrates can concentrate on the core business of presiding over matters,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>The country\u2019s top most judge further said the judiciary awaits the foreign currency they requested from treasury for the purchase of houses and vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are still awaiting the provision of foreign currency which we requested from treasury,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Malaba said the judiciary has gone as far as engaging local banks for help.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have engaged FBC bank to provide those to magistrates so that they can acquire motor vehicles,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe also entered into partnership with National Building Society to fund the construction of affordable houses for magistrates throughout the country.
