{"id":88600,"date":"2023-12-20T11:22:55","date_gmt":"2023-12-20T09:22:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/zimbabwe\/all-news\/united-states-court-disqualifies-former-president-donald-trump-from-seeking-re-election"},"modified":"2023-12-20T14:51:18","modified_gmt":"2023-12-20T12:51:18","slug":"united-states-court-disqualifies-former-president-donald-trump-from-seeking-re-election","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.cc\/zimbabwe\/all-news\/united-states-court-disqualifies-former-president-donald-trump-from-seeking-re-election","title":{"rendered":"United States Court Disqualifies Former President Donald Trump From Seeking Re-election"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Zimbabwe. <\/strong><\/span>Former United States of America President Donald Trump has been barred from running for president next year in Colorado by the Colorado Supreme Court, reported <b>BBC News<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>The court ruled 4-3 that Trump was not an eligible candidate because he had engaged in an insurrection over the US Capitol riot nearly three years ago.<\/p>\n<p>The ruling applies only to Colorado\u2019s 05 March Republican primary but it could affect Trump\u2019s status in the state for the 05 November general election.<\/p>\n<p>It does not stop Trump running in the other states and his campaign says it will appeal to the US Supreme Court.<\/p>\n<p>The ruling marks the first-ever use of Section 3 of the US Constitution\u2019s 14th Amendment to disqualify a presidential candidate.<br \/>\nThe 14th Amendment was ratified after the American Civil War. Section 3 was intended to block secessionists from returning to previous government roles once southern states re-joined the Union.<\/p>\n<p>It was used against Confederate President Jefferson Davis and his vice-president Alexander Stephens, both of whom had served in Congress. It has seldom been invoked since.<\/p>\n<p>The Tuesday ruling sets the stage for the Supreme Court, whose 6-3 conservative majority includes three Trump appointees, to consider whether the former President is eligible to serve another term. The justices wrote in their ruling:<\/p>\n<p>We do not reach these conclusions lightly.
