Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. <\/strong><\/span>President Emmerson Mnangagwa\u2019s key ally, Owen \u201cMudha\u201d Ncube, who is the Minister of State for Midlands Provincial Affairs and Devolution, and Gokwe-Kana MP, recently wrote a letter to telecommunications firm, Econet Zimbabwe\u2019s Gweru branch trying to impose a candidate to a vacancy which does not exist.<\/p>\n

In a letter dated 24 January 2024, which has circulated on social media, Ncube requested the manager of the Econet Gweru branch to employ one Trevor Chidende who is said to be a holder of an Honours Degree in Information Systems. Wrote Ncube:<\/p>\n

This office seeks to recommend Trevor Chidende for a vacant post in your company. He is a holder of an Honours Degree in Information Systems.<\/p>\n

I have no doubt that once equipped with the knowledge and skills from your institution; he will contribute immensely to the development of our nation.<\/p>\n

Could you kindly consider his application.
\nCommenting on the development, award-winning investigative journalist Hopewell Chin\u2019ono said the letter is a manifestation of the \u201cgross abuse of authority\u201d. He wrote on X:<\/p>\n

In a deeply corrupt society like what Zimbabwe has become in the past 5 years, this is just another day at the office.<\/p>\n

This is gross misuse of authority which undermines fair competition and merit-based hiring practices.<\/p>\n

Such corrupt actions erode public trust and correctly lead to accusations of corruption and nepotism.<\/p>\n

But hey, this is Zimbabwe where anything goes, the Bongo-Bongo Land of corruption!<\/p>\n

Let us assume that Econet employs this chap after receiving this letter from the minister; How will the minister deal with a situation where there is a need for arbitration between Econet and another entity?<\/p>\n

Let us assume that Econet refused to be part of this nepotistic corrupt request, how will it be treated if there is an issue which requires the minister\u2019s intervention?<\/p>\n

In a normal country, the minister would resign or be fired for this. In a normal country the opposition would be on top of this issue.<\/p>\n

Are we a normal country? Let us wait and see!<\/p>\n
